Old Style Army Infantry Crusher Cap

Dear boxcarsix,

Andrew, I just have to tell you that the crusher I just received is the best reproduction crusher cap I have ever seen. I have been looking for a long time for a crusher cap which is at least close to the original that I own. Well, you really "nailed' this one. It is actually much better than what I expected. I really think that it could be easily mistaken for an original. Everything from the details of the piping to the visor to the material to even the weight of the cap are so "right-on". I truly believe that if more people knew about what you do, you would become very happy. I just know there are other people out there like me who are looking for an accurate reproduction of WWII crusher caps and are willing to pay for them. After seeing the repros that are available today from China and elsewhere, and then comparing those to what you make, it is like comparing a Ford to a Rolls Royce. Thank you for doing what you do and I wish you much success in your cap making trade.

Newly rebuilt cap with new band increased in width, new smaller  leather visor, (some people prefer the shorter  visor, some people prefer the 2.5" or 3" visor. There was no standard except in the factory made caps. The visor looks longer in this picture, but it is under 2".) Metal skull and embroidered eagle hand sewn to cap. This cap also has a new lambskin v type sweatband hand sewn to the cap with the felt backing.

WWI German "Reitmutze" Silk Riding Cap Crusher

Picture
"Some WWI German officers chose to wear schirmmutzen with silk tops, which are wrongly described as "special pilot's caps", when in fact they are riding silks, the cap cap being called a Reitmutze!"

The picture of the pilot is of Leutnant Kurt Wusthoff, wearing such a cap. Wusthoff was credited with 27kills, and awarded the Pour le Merite for his efforts! During WWI, the first true crusher caps appeared with soft leather visors and no pasteboard frame,or wire stiffeners in the top, something called a "softband cap". These were field duty Schirmmutzen that could be rolled up and tucked away into the sleeve of a jacket.

This hand made cap is made from grey satin silk, with red piping and black velvet band. It is styled after the Model 1914 cap which had red piping at the top of the cap and the top of the band.It was also called a technician's cap and was issued to artillery and flying units among some.

The cap has a satin lining, with a hand sewn leather visor and lamb skin  sweatband complete with small bow.

The insignia are original and make a nice addition
